Game Jame Project
Made with Twine
In Theocrasaurus, you are a dinosaur enjoying your time in the afterlife stomping around and doing dinosaur things. After a good stomping session, you find that you broke, well, everything – including the rules of the universe. Now it’s up to you to put the universe back together again.
About the Project
This project was created as part of Global Game Jam 2024 at the Universities at Shady Grove location. Global Game Jam is a week-long event where participants create a game based on a theme alone or in a small group and can optionally compete for prizes. I entered Global Game Jam as a solo developer, and the theme of this Game Jam was “Make Me Laugh,” so I designed this project to be a Mad-Libs style game with a silly tone.

Game Design
Approaching the theme of “Make Me Laugh” was daunting at first, as my goal for Global Game Jam was to make a game that showcased my writing skill. Originally, I discarded the idea of a visual novel or a text-based game on the grounds that it would be difficult to make a game funny based solely on the writing style.
Instead, I played with the idea of the player making themselves laugh by giving them agency over the story and letting them create something silly on their own. From there, I came up with the Mad-Libs style approach of putting together absurd sentences to change the world around them. Along the way, I came back around to the idea of a text-based game that incorporated that player-centered humor.

Problem Solving
Originally, the Twine version of Theocrasaurus was going to be an outline and proof-of-concept that I would then build into a small game in Unity, but that changed along the way for two reasons.
The first and most obvious one was time. Making even a small game in Unity is extremely time-consuming, especially by oneself, and the Jam fell on a week when I had very limited hours to create my game. As a solo developer, I felt that I would need more time to make a Unity game in a way that would properly convey the tone I wanted.
The second reason was that I was having fun with making the game in Twine. Developing only in Twine where I could focus on the content of the narrative and the branching structure let me carry the lighthearted mood of the game the entire way through.
Making Theocrasaurus into a word replacement game also presented some unique challenges. I had to be mindful of the number of words the player could use due to the exponential increase of combinations one can make by adding even one more word to the mix. This meant that every word had to be useful in making the sentence either correct or ridiculous, which was a difficult balance to find.
The number of combinations one could make also meant that I had to write over 60 endings, one for every combination the player could make with their words. Writing these endings to be satisfying and witty took time which I might have otherwise spent fleshing out gameplay around collecting words that I chose not to include. However, I wrote them all over the course of just a few hours.
Accomplishments
Global Game Jam 2024 was a huge success for me as a solo developer and narrative designer as I was able to write and program a game that I am proud to show using a program I was less familiar with on a fast deadline. Theocrasaurus earned an honorable mention at the Universities at Shady Grove location, an accomplishment especially due to the fact that the first, second, and third place winners were groups of two or more.
